Argentina’s basketball icon Manu Ginobili is back to full fitness and playing a pivotal role for the play-off chasing San Antonio Spurs.

Injuries have hindered him in international competition in recent years but his performances of late with the Spurs have fuelled hopes that he will play for his country at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

“The tournament in Turkey is coming soon and as it gets closer, I am more and more looking forward to playing it,” Ginobili said.

“It would be a strange feeling not to be part of the World Championship, it’s inevitable.”

Ginobili was outstanding at the 2002 FIBA World Championship in Indianapolis when Argentina won a silver medal, and he was terrific at the 2006 event in Japan when Argentina reached the Semi-Finals before a last-second defeat to eventual champions Spain.

The veteran guard’s wife, however, is going to be giving birth to twins.

“As I said many times, there are things that come into play,” Ginobili said in the Argentinian media.

“This is a complicated decision and whatever I decide, it will be a difficult choice.”

Sources say that Walsh is concerned about the team's defensive woes. One possibility is hiring a defensive coach but the mere suggestion of making changes to his staff clearly annoyed D'Antoni. "No. No thought whatsoever. And there will be none."

A defiant Mike D’Antoni vowed Wednesday that he won’t make changes to his Knicks coaching staff.

“We’re not throwing anybody under the bus,” D’Antoni said. “That’s not going to happen.”

The question about making changes on the bench was posed to D’Antoni by a reporter and not by Donnie Walsh. The Knicks president has given no indication that he wants to revamp D’Antoni’s staff.

However, sources close to the Knicks president say that Walsh is concerned about the team’s defensive woes. The best way to solve the problem is to acquire defensive-minded players. But the culture also needs to change, and yesterday D’Antoni, who has a reputation for being rigid, made it clear that his system works.

With the Knicks on pace for a second straight 50-loss season under D’Antoni and the team struggling defensively, the assumption is that the defensive-minded Walsh will want to address the issue during the offseason.

One possibility is hiring a defensive coach, which doesn’t necessarily mean that one of the current assistant coaches – Dan D’Antoni, Herb Williams, Phil Weber or Kenny Atkinson – will lose his job.

But the mere suggestion of making changes to his staff clearly annoyed D’Antoni. When asked about possibly changing the style of play, D’Antoni answered, “No.” As for the coaching staff, he said: “No. No thought whatsoever. And there will be none.”

When Bill Plaschke asked Coach Phil Jackson whether this team had the same consistent urgency of last season, he said, “I don’t think so … We don’t have that … Not that we can’t reclaim it at some point … That’s what we’re trying to do.”

Jackson later added, simply, “The urgency of playing well has not struck us yet.”

In an ominously quiet winning locker room, several players agreed.

Said Pau Gasol: “We have to face reality. We have to make a conscious effort to get that sense of urgency… We have to do a better job figuring out what we do.”

Said Lamar Odom: “This was about ground we’re not supposed to be giving.”

On a night the Sacramento Kings openly campaigned for Tyreke Evans to be Rookie of the Year, the exciting first-year guard appropriately obliged with another vintage performance.

Evans recorded his first career triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, leading the Kings to a 113-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

With frequent chants of “ROY!” (Rookie of the Year), Evans responded with a strong overall game that has typified his season. Evans is trying to join the rare company of Oscar Robertson, LeBron James and Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to average 20 points, five rebounds and five assists as a rookie.

Sporting News reporter Sean Deveney mentioned a couple hot-seat candidates: Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro and Pistons coach John Kuester: Injuries turned this season into a brutal one for Kuester, but there was little progress shown overall.

Sporting News reporter Sean Deveney, in a short post discussing rumors that Philadelphia 76ers coach Eddie Jordan could be in trouble, also mentioned a couple other hot-seat candidates: Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro and Pistons coach John Kuester:

Injuries turned this season into a brutal one for Kuester, but there was little progress shown overall. He was considered a placeholder coach all along, so the Pistons won’t be afraid to move.

Joe Dumars was pretty clear before Kuester was hired as coach that he wasn’t looking for a high profile (read: expensive) candidate because he knew the team was re-tooling (read: rebuilding) and wasn’t ready to contend, so it didn’t make sense to have a price coach overseeing a team in transition that would likely have more changes.

Give Vinny Del Negro credit for honesty — and realism.

Asked Wednesday if it’s conceivable with their current personnel for the Bulls to play the style they need to to have success — defend, rebound, run — the coach didn’t hesitate.

“No, not right now,” Del Negro said. “So we’re going to have to junk the game up as best we can. Maybe we can get a couple of guys with a hot hand or change up some defensive coverages.”

“One of the reasons we became a better defensive team throughout the year when we were healthy is we had a nice foundation to what we were doing and there was accountability. Now with the lack of bodies, we’re not controlling the paint.”

“We’ve had to make adjustments. We have gotten slow on rotations. We have gotten away from what helped us win because of the injuries.”

The rumors are persisting that 76ers coach Eddie Jordan will be fired after the season, if not sooner.

Jordan has heard the published reports saying management will fire him at the end of the season, but he refuses to think about them.

Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski has refused to comment on those rumors.

Jordan said he’s focusing on preparing the players for each game. The Sixers were 23-40 before their game Wednesday night against the Charlotte Bobcats. They had lost six of seven games and nine of 12.

Jordan also defended his staff.

“Look, if you know how to handle it, it won’t bother you,” Jordan said. “You stay strong. There’s an old poem I read a long time ago about the oak tree. We’ve been around long enough, done enough diligence that our roots grow deeper than you can see.”

“I have a good quality staff. The staff has been to the Finals [not together]. We’ve got good, rich, solid basketball history and we work hard every day. And our team works hard every day. That’s all you want.”

Jordan denied the rumors that players have stopped listening to him.

“We just won a game against the [sixth] seed [in the Eastern Conference playoff standings] in Toronto,” he said. “You guys push that aside like it’s nothing. We split a road trip. … Our team is working hard. They’re good character guys. Like all teams, every once in a while they need a kick in the pants and motivation and positive thoughts.”
